Bad Day for the Burnleys

Alright, the whole everyone-being-injured thing was a good joke. Let’s get ‘em healthy now, Burnley.

The Result:

Burnley fell to Southampton, 1-0.

How It Happened:

Quickly, then very slowly. Southampton snuck by a goal in the fifth minute, and try as Burnley might from there, it was the only goal scored. Some guy named Danny Ings. Couldn’t just have one gerund. Took all of them.

What It Means:

It means Burnley’s in a little bit of a hole in the EPL. Two games. Zero points. Not what you want. Yes, everyone’s injured, but still—not what you want.

What’s Next:

The next EPL action is on the road Saturday at Newcastle. The next match of any kind is Wednesday’s visit from Manchester City in the League Cup’s fourth round, a match in which it appears Burnley will be resting its key men, forgoing the League Cup-Europa League dream to try to shore up their Premier League effort. Not where you want to be, folks.

Other News:

Dale Stephens did start, and play, so he’s officially a Burnley now (you become a Claret when you sign—you become a Burnley when you play in a shorthanded lineup).

Burnley’s also apparently set to make a move to attempt to sign Ryan Christie, a midfielder for Celtic F.C., the best team in Scotland. I like it. Nothing like a good Scottish accent.

General Thoughts:

There’s this crepe place in Austin that I’ve picked up Uber Eats orders from twice now. I think the people who run it are hard of hearing, because the first time I was in there they didn’t say anything to me and used some hand gestures. So yesterday, when I was back for the first time, I didn’t say anything, and instead used hand gestures. They didn’t say anything back, but I’m still not convinced they aren’t just a quiet group of folks, and I’m worried I’m going to accidentally offend them one of these days.

Burnley Thoughts:

Don’t like losing, I’ll tell you that.

Just kidding. I don’t mind it. But it would be cool to do some winning. Honestly, kind of feel like the team’s good enough to avoid relegation even with an even worse start, so if the Europa League’s the goal, maybe go all in on beating Man City Wednesday and keeping that path alive? Just my thoughts as a Europa League fan.
