Will Aggressive Moves by the Pac-12 and Big Ten Backfire?

Earlier this week, we asked whether the Big Ten and Pac-12 were pushing to move football to the spring so their own NIT excellence could outshine their struggles on the gridiron.

While our hypothesis may have been correct, it now appears there’s something we, and these leagues, didn’t think of:

Nonconference basketball.

When the Big Ten and Pac-12 pushed football out of the fall semester, they also pushed winter sports out of the fall semester. At least, that’s my impression. Kind of hard to keep track of it all. Now, that leaves them with few or potentially no nonconference games, while the SEC, ACC, and Big 12 teams get to pad their résumés playing Northwestern State and Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Stetson.

Of course, this could all change. We could be left fall semester sports-less entirely. But for right now, the Big Ten and Pac-12’s gamble is looking like a scary play.
