Interestingly, American Dairy Association Indiana Inc. (what a name) only gives the choices of whole, two percent, and skim, despite the Indy 500 milk tradition starting when 1936 champion Louis Meyer asked for buttermilk (which is fermented and therefore lasts longer in the heat, which may have been why his mother reportedly told him to drink it on hot days). Hence the write-in column, which American Dairy Association Indiana Inc. does publish, to their credit. Personally, I’ve never had buttermilk, but I’m intrigued. Might have to find some for Sunday.
