Wait, the ESPYs Aren’t Tonight?

It has come to my attention that the ESPYs aren’t tonight, and I have questions, the first of which is, how long has this been the case? Secondly, were we always able to watch them on the night after the All-Star Game? Because when I looked at the Wikipedia page for the ESPYs, it implied we weren’t, but that doesn’t match my memories. Thirdly, if the answer to that second question is no, then what did we watch the night after the All-Star Game?

For whatever it’s worth, I don’t remember the last time I watched the ESPYs, but I do remember thinking the Taylor Hicks-backed montage for the Best Moment ESPY the year the Saints won it was the most moving thing I’d ever seen at what must have been the age of twelve. I went on a big montage kick in my head around then (I would imagine montages of myself set to various songs), and I think the ESPYs probably caused it. So thanks for that, ESPYs. Still a big montage guy, if I’m being honest.
