There was a fight at NASCAR’s All-Star Race and I forgot to tell you.

I know that a lot of The Barking Crow’s readership relies on us as their primary source of NASCAR-related news. Which is why I’m sorry it’s taken so long for me to inform you of some big news from Saturday night’s NASCAR All-Star Race.

Now, if you’re confused by the existence of NASCAR’s All-Star Race, I get it. I’m confused too. Since every notable driver competes in every race of the season, every race is an All-Star Race, right? Well, my impression with this one is that they kick out the riffraff, making sure you only have to watch 15 drivers you’ve never heard of instead of the usual 30 (plus the ten you know), and then change up the rules so winning’s the only thing that matters.

To be honest, I could be wrong on all of that, though. I’ve never watched it, and by this point in the season I’m usually completely out of the loop.

Either way, there’s an All-Star Race, and this year, it ended with blows:

Great fight, right? That’s Clint Bowyer using every five-year-old’s favorite dance move to pummel either Ryan Newman or just the air inside Ryan Newman’s car, and that’s Ryan Newman in the car.

There are a lot of things to love about this, ranging from the standard—the cause was ambiguous and nothing was resolved—to the unique—have you ever seen someone walk away as calmly from a fight as Clint Bowyer did?

Bowyer’s booty-shaking punching style was great on its own, but mixed with the helmet that makes him look like an expressionless being from another galaxy, it becomes elevated to three of the funniest seconds to hit The Internet™ this last week. Then, as we’ve noted, Bowyer just walks away. Mission accomplished. Message sent. Off to the interviews:

All of this highlights three great things about NASCAR:

  1. There are fights.
  2. After the fights, you get to hear the fighting parties explain themselves within minutes.
  3. NASCAR didn’t suspend these guys. Didn’t fine them. Just let it be. Even hockey gives players a major penalty for throwing hands, but in NASCAR, the headlines are valuable enough that it makes more sense for the league to give out bonuses for violent acts on camera (they don’t do this…to my knowledge).

In other words, NASCAR has my attention back, and I’m ready for 600 miles of racing Sunday night (if I remember it’s on). I hope you are too.
