The Return of Weber Fever: Facts About Weber State’s Week One Opponent

My beloved Weber State Beekeepers The Football Edition™ play their first game of the season today, visiting the Aztecs of San Diego State.

You already know about Weber State. But you might not know very much about the Aztecs. Or San Diego State. Here are some facts:

The Aztec Empire existed for about a hundred years in the central part of what is know Mexico.

Happened around the 1400’s/1500’s.

I had a friend in high school whose name was very similar to Hernán Cortés’ name.

Yes, one of my friend’s names bore a striking resemblance to that of the jerk who destroyed the Aztec Empire. Probably not the same person, though.

San Diego State is not literally an Aztec school.

This could be confusing, so let me say it again: The Aztec thing with San Diego State is just a nickname. Shockingly, their former mascot, who was named Monty Montezuma, has been discontinued for being problematic, as has his successor, the Aztec Warrior.

San Diego is not a state.

But these idiots think they are.

Kawhi Leonard went to San Diego State.

Other notable alumni include Tony Gwynn, Tony Gwynn Jr., Marshall Faulk, Stephen Strasburg, Julie Kavner (voiced Marge Simpson), and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Gwyneth Paltrow did not really attend San Diego State.

I made that last one up. Believable, though, right?

Carrot Top might not have graduated college.

Her Wikipedia page says she dropped out to focus on acting. I stopped reading, so I’m not the guy to ask about whether or not she went back. Nothing wrong with not having a college degree, though. She’s clearly done well whether she has one or not.

San Diego has one of the most impressive sewer systems in the continental United States.

Ok, I’m only making things up now, so I’ll stop. Go Beekeepers.
