Stu’s Notes: The Minor Leagues and Milk

It is important that you all tell me when you are enjoying things of milk, and things related to milk, and things that might not be milk but are close enough that—since you’re thinking of me anyway, because we all are friends here—you think, “Maybe I should tell Stu, so that we can emotionally bond through sharing this moment together.”

This is why I appreciate our good friend Derek, who’s been on top of milk-related minor league baseball news all summer. From the Appleton Post-Crescent (which I guess Derek reads daily):

“Mooove over, Spotted Cow. Here comes a new beer featuring another popular Wisconsin cow on the label.

Just in time for National Dairy Month, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers fans can salute the state’s beloved bovine with an Udder Tuggers Cream Ale from Badger State Brewing. Cans of the ale feature the udders-forward charging dairy cow logo that’s been, well, a cash cow of merchandising success since its debut in 2019.

Last year’s four-day run of Udder Tuggers games — filled with dairy-related promotions and Timber Rattlers players donning cow-themed uniforms — was the team’s largest draw of the year, said Seth Merrill, the Timber Rattlers’ director of business development.”

Well, of course it was your largest draw of the year, Seth. Your normal nickname is a deadly snake. Your nickname for those four days was basically the milkmen, and milkmen are America’s favorites. Speaking of which. From Twitter (which I guess Derek also reads daily):

Milk, like love, transcends language. Take that, Babel.

Joe Kelly Is the White Sox’ Best Pitcher

White Sox pitcher ERA’s since July 9th:

  • Lance Lynn: 8.40
  • Liam Hendriks: 7.20
  • Davis Martin: 6.00
  • Lucas Giolito: 5.79
  • José Ruiz: 5.40
  • Matt Foster: 4.50
  • Michael Kopech: 3.48
  • Kendall Graveman: 3.00
  • Reynaldo López: 2.08
  • Johnny Cueto: 1.71
  • Jimmy Lambert: 0.00
  • Tanner Banks: 0.00
  • Dylan Cease: 0.00
  • Joe Kelly: 0.00

Need a tiebreaker? Joe Kelly has a 0.29 FIP over the stretch. Cease’s is 1.84 (Banks’s and Lambert’s are worse).

Yes, after a dominant weekend against Cleveland, our guy is running things again. Season FIP could dip below 3.00 soon. Don’t believe the misinformation campaigns.

Oh, and this weekend’s performances were despite all of this:

NASCAR: Rigged!!!!!!!!

Ok, so nobody’s making much of this specific complaint on this, because Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch aren’t evidently popular enough for people to feel bad for them, but the fact their disqualifications resulted in Chase Elliott winning? Color me skeptical.

On the IndyCar front, it sounds like Josef Newgarden’s going to be ok, so that’s good. I cannot, though, remember who won the race yesterday. I know Newgarden won Saturday, but yesterday? There’s no way to know.

On the F1 front, it sounds like Charles Leclerc is going to be ok physically but not emotionally. If he does come back, though, there’ll be a great soundtrack to the championship video montage.
