Is New Salamis F.C. Named for the Lunchmeat?

It’s one of those things that makes you say, “Surely, this cannot be. Surely, this team is not named after lunchmeat. Surely, this is just a funny coincidence.”

Unfortunately, yes, it’s just a funny coincidence.

I’m not sure how, exactly, I became aware of New Salamis F.C., a British soccer club seemingly named after my favorite variation of pork. I think it’s because I followed a low-level British soccer club’s account on Twitter after they tweeted, in a string of match updates (corner kick for this team, missed shot by that team, etc.) that one of their staffers or coaches or someone—I can’t remember who but it was someone, dammit—had been pooped on by a bird and then that team recently played New Salamis. I could be wrong though. Also, I keep wanting to call them The New Salamis. Making Salamis a plural noun. Alas, it is singular. The club is named for the ancient Cypriot city of Salamis (a bunch of Cypriots in Britain formed the club back in 1971 and named it after an existing Cypriot club). What does Cypriot mean? It’s Cyprus’s demonym. Cypriot:American::Cyprus:United States.

The obvious question, then, is whether salami is named after Salamis. Again, no. Might both have to do with salt, though, or so Wikipedia is implying (had to dig deep on this one—ended up on the page for a Greek island that’s also named Salamis because the city of Salamis’s page didn’t talk about the name origin).

It’s interesting that we don’t put salami in more breakfast food. Seems like it’d add some flavor to a scramble. Might try that the next time I’m ambitious and buy frozen hashbrowns. (Yes, ambition for me results in buying frozen hashbrowns. Maybe not ideal, but better than it leading me to start wars! I have started zero wars in my life. I don’t get enough credit for that. I also rarely buy frozen hashbrowns. You can connect those dots.)
