We’re what, a week into the Olympics? And no U.S. swimmer has won eight gold medals, which alongside losing both those wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is making me question a lot of things I assumed about America in the mid-to-late 2000’s.
Anyway, what’s changed in the U.S. since 2008? Well, California’s a lot dryer, and so are Nevada and Arizona and part of Utah judging by those things I see about Lake Powell and Lake Mead, and a lot of people live in California, and some more people like in Nevada and Arizona and part of Utah, and one has to wonder whether the relative scarcity of water is holding this country back from swimming dominance.
Thankfully, they say sea levels are on the rise, so in a few decades we should have netted positive on total water and be on our way to someone winning nine gold medals in a single games. Whew.
If we don’t invest in desalination, we’re doomed. Unless, of course, we chlorinate the oceans. Then we’ll be fine.
