College Football Is Trying to Be the NIT Today

Let’s take a look at the twelve Division I football teams playing Division I football today:

  • Eastern Kentucky
  • Marshall
  • Middle Tennessee State
  • Army
  • SMU
  • Texas State
  • Houston Baptist
  • North Texas
  • Arkansas State
  • Memphis
  • Stephen F. Austin
  • UTEP

We get it, college football. You want to be like the NIT.

Honestly, you didn’t do a bad job. Marshall and North Texas have been rising towards NIT prominence for a few years now. MTSU was an NIT factor as recently as 2018. Texas State could be a player any year now. SMU and Memphis are no strangers to NIT Bracketologies. Stephen F. Austin can always make the NIT, at any time it wants.

Yeah, over half the teams you did great on. But the other five? All at least a few years away, and personally, I’d guess we see none in contention this decade. Swap those out for some middling SEC schools and then we’ll talk.
