Burnley Lost to West Ham Yesterday, and That’s Fine

West Ham’s pretty good. Burnley’s still in good shape for avoiding relegation (can still clinch next week). I’m not mad. Being mad seems unreasonable here.

The Result:

West Ham 2, Burnley 1

How It Happened:

Burnley took an early lead on a Chris Wood penalty, but the Hammers took it right back, scoring twice in the next ten minutes before both sides went quiet the rest of the day.

What It Means:

With West Brom playing Wolverhampton to a draw, Burnley’s still nine points ahead of relegation with just four matches left to play, so with a win on Monday at Fulham, the lads would clinch Premier League survival with a few weeks of cushion. They don’t need to win at Fulham, to be clear. And even a draw would probably put them a point or a Fulham lack-of-three-points away, as West Brom plays Arsenal on Sunday. But the win will be the goal.

Other News:

Wood picked up a little knock late. Hopefully nothing that lingers. One of Burnley’s goalkeeping coaches, Fabbian Otte, is leaving to take over the top goalkeeping coach role with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. He’s been with the Clarets for a year.

General Thoughts:

Who figured out the whole teeth-brushing thing?

Burnley Thoughts:

This year, not going to complain about a loss to West Ham, even at home. The lads are fine. Everything’s fine. Just don’t lose to Fulham next week and we can all still relax (especially if West Brom loses Sunday).

What’s Next:

Fulham away on Monday. Leeds at home the next Saturday. Liverpool at home on Wednesday the 19th. Then, the finale with Sheffield United on Sunday the 23rd. Leading Fulham by nine points and West Brom by ten, clinching will hopefully be done on Monday, and if not Monday than by the following Saturday, when Leeds comes to town.
