Well that was a bummer.
The Result:
Brighton 2, Burnley 1
How It Happened:
Burnley was off to a smashing start, with James Tarkowski smashing one home in the earliest minutes with his noggin and a bunch of other guys smashing the posts. Unfortunately, nobody else smashed the net, and with about twenty minutes left the Seagulls broke through with two goals in quick succession. Sadness fell upon the land.
What It Means:
Relegation probability’s at 33% per FiveThirtyEight, folks.
(Europa League probability? They don’t list that. Bastards.)
What’s Next:
Saturday morning at Liverpool, which is Burnley’s home field but remember that does not mean Burnley is actually expected to be competitive. Gotta keep expectations reasonable.
Other News:
I don’t think anyone got hurt, but what do I know? It was on Peacock! More transfer buzz going around, but that’s just rumors still.
Burnley FC Women rocked Sheffield in their season opener, winning 4-0. Hell yeah.
In Partner Club land, Ayr United (Scotland, second tier) lost in penalties to Dundee United (first tier), falling out of the Scottish League Cup. Got a red card, though, so at least they’re cool. Llandudno beat Llay Miners to advance in the Welsh Cup.
Thoughts:
Burnley looked pretty capable by the numbers, so one of those weird games where the performance was encouraging but the result sets the club back a bit.
