Burnley Burned, But Not Brightly Enough

Some good, some bad; some new, some the same.

The Result:

Burnley 2, Leicester City 2

How It Happened:

Burnley took an early lead, with Jamie Vardy conceding an own goal off of an Ashley Westwood corner just twelve minutes into the contest. Vardy equalized at the other end later in the half, but Maxwel Cornet’s first EPL goal, just three minutes later, put the Clarets back ahead, where they stayed for most of the second half. With time getting close to winding down, though, Vardy found the net again, and Burnley was sent away emptyhanded after what appeared to be a Chris Wood finisher in the closing seconds was nullified by the Clarets being offside.

What It Means:

Burnley got its second point of the campaign, but was denied its first win. Still ahead of only Norwich in the table, still within three points of five other clubs (although three of those play today and tomorrow). Relegation probability, per FiveThirtyEight, is now up to 40%.

What’s Next:

Saturday, Burnley gets to host Norwich City in the best opportunity there will be to get that first Premier League victory of the season.

Other News:

Cornet had to leave shortly after his goal with a hamstring issue. Devastating, but hopefully only for a short while. Ongoing story. Matěj Vydra got the start after looking good against Rochdale this week.

In partner-club land, Cobh Ramblers lost to Bray; Ayr United played a scoreless tie against Greenock Morton; and Portadown fell 4-1 to Dungannon Swifts, dropping to last place in a league that does relegate.

Thoughts:

Frustrating to see another good result foiled late, but good to be in that position, and good to still get a point. The expected goals metrics weren’t as high on Burnley as they’ve been other times this year, so there seems to have been some good luck for a change. Could really use that win next weekend, and with a trip to Southampton and a visit from Brentford also on the calendar, October overall looks to be a big month of opportunity for the lads. Hope they seize it.
