Having worked in Corporate America for a year, and “worked” there for six months after that, I learned the importance of keeping the shareholders happy. The purpose of the corporation, I was told, was to make those shareholders money, and for two-thirds of my tenure, I did that.
So when I recently heard the news about the Amazon fires, I thought of the shareholders.
I believe Amazon is one of the biggest companies in the world. It gets a lot of attention. I’ve even heard it called the “lungs of the planet” recently, which sounds like overkill for an online retailer/web services provider, but maybe I just don’t ‘get’ tech. Anyway, if they have something on fire and they can’t put it out, that’s definitely concerning. Especially for the shareholders.
I’m no expert on the markets, so maybe I’m missing something here, but it looks to me like the stock has remained relatively stable the last few weeks, even as the company literally burns. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense, but maybe that’s just how much faith investors have in Amazon to figure this out?
Regardless, interesting to watch going forward. Hope no one’s getting hurt. Especially the shareholders.
