Wright State’s Loss Is Bad, But Not That Bad, But Still Bad

Ok, you guys done with football?

Good.

The NIT will not wait.

Wright State lost yesterday, to UIC, which every mildly interested Horizon League fan knows is bad news for the Raiders’ NIT odds.

But relax.

It’s not as terrible as it seems.

Yes, Northern Kentucky’s gotten its feet back under it, but the Norse still have losses to Green Bay and Detroit Mercy on their shirt. Yes, Youngstown State’s hanging around, but the Penguins play NKU and Wright State both on the road in the next five or six days (depends when you’re reading this). The sleepers—Oakland and Green Bay—have woken up, and not in a good way.

Still, the loss didn’t help the boys from Dayton. Wright State could be up a game and a half right now, entering their upcoming homestand (Cleveland State, Youngstown, NKU) with a chance to put the rest of the league away. They could be thinking about how, exactly, to lose in The Tournament Formerly Known as Motor City Madness™ so they could bring the Horizon League another NIT Participation Ribbon (they give these out, believe it or not, and you aren’t gonna check if that’s true). Instead, they need to avoid looking past Cleveland State to the Youngstowners, and avoid looking past the Youngstowners to the Northerners of Kentucky, and avoid just coming out and laying another egg like they did at UIC.

The armor has been penetrated.

But how deep is the wound?
