Why Did USC Fire Clay Helton When They Did?

Some of you have pointed out that USC’s firing of Clay Helton was rather…sudden. Yeah, it was a bad loss, but it wasn’t stunning. Was he really on that short of a leash?

Well, evidently.

Or so they’d have you think.

What really happened?

Look. We’ve all been busy. I’ve been busy too. And I too forgot that Clay Helton was the coach at USC. If you asked me to say who the coach at USC was on Thursday morning, I would’ve said, “Clay…Clay Helton? Or was that a decade ago?” You could’ve had me convinced Mario Cristobal had the job. You could’ve had me convinced Urban Meyer had a son coaching there. You could’ve had me convinced the program was coachless and again, nobody had noticed, because clearly, what really happened here was USC lost to Stanford and went, “What the hell?” then looked and realized they’d forgotten to ever fire Clay Helton.

Sorry, pal. Sometimes you stay under the radar. Sometimes you don’t.

P.S. Please please please USC go get Lane Kiffin I want to see whether Oxford or Knoxville riots harder.
