Full disclosure: I’m pissed that the Cubs have to play in Milwaukee on the Fourth of July again. Two years in a row under the leaking roof, four straight Independence Days playing a division opponent on the road, just feels kind of messed up. I’m also pissed that more Brewers fans don’t want to go watch baseball on the Fourth of July. I get it, I will also be spending the Fourth on a lake surrounded by trees, but the fact that this is such a Wisconsin thing to do makes me think maybe the Brewers shouldn’t get so many Fourths of July at home.
Additional caveat: Either I am missing something Fourth of July-related or Major League Baseball is. Last year, these idiots didn’t even have every team playing. I’m quite capable of being wrong, but it would strike me that baseball should be taking every opportunity possible to insert itself into Americana days.
Now.

Are the Mets pissed about this? I’d be pissed about this if I were the Mets. MLB also has them idle this year on both Memorial Day and Labor Day. (I know Labor Day isn’t a patriotic holiday, but it gets shaped as one in retail, and it’s a big day for cookouts.) Did the Mets request this? Do the Mets hate America? I think not. I think Rob Manfred, notorious for being ignorant to what people like (and possibly the concept that people like things), does not understand that Americans like baseball to be happening on peak days of hot dog consumption and red, white, and blue imagery.
Hang up the bunting, Rob. Come on.
