Where Will Joe Biden Eat Ice Cream Next?

President Biden is coming to our hometown tomorrow (Crystal Lake, Illinois), and given his recent ice cream binge (Traverse City, La Crosse, the White House), there’s reason to believe he may be indulging in some frozen dairy, which, of course, has put us into ceaseless discussion about which local ice cream establishment will take his business.

The contenders:

Kaleidoscoops

This would be the betting favorite were markets open. It’s not the best ice cream spot in Crystal Lake, but it’s close, and it’s downtown which makes for better photos.

The Freeze

The best ice cream spot in Crystal Lake, The Freeze looks like a stop on a pre-Interstate road trip. Great sign on top, open-air inside, wraparound parking lot, plenty of space for people to park their bikes if they came over from the lake. A bit trickier with traffic, since Route 14’s kind of busy there as it exits town, but if this president likes soft serve, The Freeze is the move. One concern would be the line (when you’re the best, you’re the best), but if he goes in the late afternoon he should be ok.

Julie Ann’s

A bit of a wildcard, Julie Ann’s is a frozen custard place serving the frozen custard lovers in town (that’s people who love frozen custard—not lovers who have somehow taken on “frozen custard” as an identifying descriptor). To be honest, I don’t think I’ve been there since I turned seven. It’s in a strip mall. Probably not where he’s gonna be.

Anyway, this has dominated our thoughts for the last 48 hours, so wanted to put it on your radar. His appearance is at the community college, but we don’t know much more than that. Lot of helicopters around this morning before we left to head back home.

  1. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you haven’t been to Julie Ann’s recently. I’ve been to ’em all and it’s my hands-down favorite.
