I was looking up Steelers quarterback stats last night, preparing to make a facetious argument that Aaron Rodgers was the greatest quarterback in Steelers history*, when I realized that…Aaron Rodgers might be the third-greatest quarterback in Steelers history?
Understandably, Steelers fans will always rank Terry Bradshaw number one. He won four Super Bowls and showed his butt in a movie. Understandably, Steelers fans will always rank Ben Roethlisberger number two. He embodied the American steel industry more than anyone else, big and messy and strong and sometimes whiny and productive and allegedly a bad guy. But third? I’m seeing Neil O’Donnell and Kordell Stewart. With all due respect…Rodgers can get there, right? Kordell Stewart was a lot of fun in Gameday 99, but Rodgers might have enough in the tank.
Where this really gets good is what happens if Jordan Love does turn out awesome in Green Bay. I could be off base here, but I think there are old heads who’d rank Bart Starr and Brett Favre each ahead of Rodgers on the Packers list. Thus, when Judgment Day arrives and the NFL Network executive tasked with keeping us occupied asks for each franchise’s all-time QB rankings, we could see Rodgers higher on the Steelers list than the Packers one.
Is your mind blown? No? Maybe I should’ve stuck with the facetious post.
*Ok here’s the logic. When you ask someone whether Aaron Rodgers or Terry Bradshaw was a better quarterback, they’ll say Aaron Rodgers. Also, I’m pretty sure he now leads the Steelers all-time in yards/game, TD’s/game, win percentage, and a whole bunch more stats. It adds up!
