What Is Opening Day Without Joe Kelly?

Opening Day is here, a day of hope and promise. From the west bank of the Sacramento River to the shadow of the Tampa airport, each crack of the bat spins Earth closer to another perfect summer.

That spin is more laborious than usual.

Joe Kelly still hasn’t re-signed with the Dodgers.

We still think Joe Kelly will eventually end up on the Dodger Stadium mound. RosterResource only projects eleven Dodger pitchers to the injured list, a number sure to increase when Andrew Friedman fires up the UCL shredder. Joe Kelly’s own shoulder will heal soon, we’re certain, because it must. It must, right? Joe Kelly is going to be ok??

The truth is, we’re optimists. We don’t know whether this season will hold any innings for our relief pitcher and our king. It’s a scary thought—baseball without Joe Kelly. But at the same time…

If Opening Day is about hope, about that promise of a summer we can’t see: Perhaps this is the year we need it most of all. Perhaps this is the spring when we most need to know that summer’s on its way.

Games begin in two hours.

We’ll keep an eye out for #99.
