Well, they were probably due for a letdown.
The Result:
Leeds 4, Burnley 0
How It Happened:
Burnley held their guests off well in the first half, but Leeds scored just before the break and then added the separator a short bit into the second half. Following a testy (and possibly racial) exchange which we’ll get to later, Leeds pulled away down the stretch.
What It Means:
Not a lot. Doesn’t help in the standings, but Burnley’s at least not getting relegated.
Other News:
Dwight McNeil said something to Ezgjan Alioski in the second half, and Alioski responded with a gesture many took as racist, in which he appeared to those many to imitate a monkey. The incident’s under investigation.
In less troubling news, Nick Pope’s knee is said to have been what kept him out, and it sounds like he should be good to go against Liverpool on Saturday.
General Thoughts:
Convenience stores are aptly named.
Burnley Thoughts:
Not a great start to the 2023 Europa League title campaign, but now it’s out of the system, the hangover’s over, and the lads can go maybe draw with Liverpool or something like that.
What’s Next:
Liverpool at home on Wednesday before the season finale at Sheffield United on Sunday. Fans will be at Turf Moor this week. We can only hope Bertie is there with them.
