With the threat of a winter storm looming tomorrow night into Thursday, let’s take a look at some weather facts.

Ok, one weather fact.
The freezing point of water is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
What does this mean for us, in Texas? Well, further north in the state, it’s going to stay below freezing from early Thursday morning until either Friday or Saturday afternoon, dipping down again Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday night, maybe Monday night I don’t know. The precipitation should indeed freeze on Thursday, if it isn’t frozen to begin with (i.e., snow) but since it’s only supposed to be a few inches of snow, tops, it seems likely roads will be passable again on Saturday, if not Friday. Further south in the state, it isn’t supposed to quite reach freezing, so those guys are fine. Here in the middle of the state (talking north-south, yes I know El Paso exists), it’s looking like it’ll melt off on Friday afternoon, provided it even ices in the first place. Last year, for context, temperatures were below freezing in some very populated parts of the state for ten straight days, and lows were getting down into the single digits consistently, which could happen this week up in the panhandle but they’re more accustomed to that sort of thing up there (and again, going to be for a much shorter amount of time).
In other words, this is not last year’s weather. Not close. One or two or three bad days, yes, take it seriously, yes, but this is a much lesser challenge than last year. At least, judging by the freezing point of water.
