It’s a very FCS Saturday, and here’s what you need to know, coming from a guy who kind of knows what’s going on:
Celebration Bowl
The Celebration Bowl itself, if you aren’t familiar, is something like five years old, and it’s effectively the HBCU National Championship (it might explicitly be that, in fact—should probably have looked that up). It features the MEAC and SWAC Champions, ESPN’s instrumental in its existence, and it’s a big deal to a lot of people.
This year, as has happened a few times in Celebration Bowls past, North Carolina A&T is playing Alcorn State. These two schools aren’t necessarily traditional HBCU powers, but they have been kings of the hill for the past few years, their prominence coinciding with the existence of the Celebration Bowl itself. Alcorn State alumni include Steve McNair and Donald Driver. North Carolina A&T might have more prominent alumni than Tarik Cohen, but he’s the one this blogger knows, and he’s the one from Greensboro, a city championed by this website.
As for the game itself: I don’t know what the line is, so let’s say, “It’s bowl season: Anything can happen,” and leave it at that.
The Semifinals
Neither semifinal is expected to be close. North Dakota State is a hefty favorite over Montana State in Fargo. James Madison is a hefty favorite over our beloved Beekeepers in that town JMU’s in (forgot its name this week—you win some, you lose some). Can Weber State’s defense make it a ballgame? Is it Jay Hill’s last day on the Beekeeper sideline? There’s only one way to find out (a few, actually, but go with me on this).
