The worst major league player so far on the 2021 season is JaCoby Jones. Jones is last in the majors in fWAR, having contributed -0.9 of the stuff to the Detroit Tigers thus far.
This is kind of mean to point out. I feel bad for bringing it up. He’s been playing so badly that the Tigers sent him down to AAA, and when the Tigers send you to AAA these days, you aren’t having the best time.
To his credit, though: Jones was worth positive 0.8 fWAR over the course of last year, and his xwOBA this year, a terrible-but-not-worst-in-baseball-terrible .255, implies he’s been a bit unlucky so far. So there is plenty of reason to have hope if you are or have interest in JaCoby Jones.
