Well, well, well.
The Avengers took over Europe.
Look, I’m not too worried about the Super League. I feel like it might be marginally worse for teams like Burnley, but it’s not like things are amazing right now for Burnley, and the fault for that lies with Burnley and nature, in equal proportion. In the end, it seems like UEFA and the clubs in question and their respective leagues are going to work something out where the clubs get more money/security and UEFA gets to keep them in the fold. Might I be wrong? Oh, definitely. I’m far from my element here. But who isn’t? Nobody knows what’s going to happen.
What I’m also not worried about?
The Europa League.
Because the European NIT’s in great shape.
Look at it this way:
The Europa League’s never made itself out to have the best teams. Unlike the Champions League. In the same vein as its American college basketball cousin, the Europa League’s been about having the right teams. That, and being complicated. Those are its two calling cards. Some people aren’t into that. They prefer the best teams. They prefer the Champions League. It’s simple-minded, sure, but simple-minded people are out there. I am routinely tricked by a three-month-old puppy. We—the human race—aren’t as smart as we fancy ourselves.
If the Super League does come into existence, it chops about one ball off of the Champions League. “The best teams? Yeah, right,” people will say, and then they’ll say, “But you know who has the right teams…” and bam. We’ve got ‘em.
So no. I’m not worried about the Super League. About time the Champions League got exposed for the basic hackjob that it is.
