The NIT Fan’s Guide to the MAAC Tournament

The MAAC!

Ok, ok. My two favorite things about the MAAC:

  1. Its name. It was named by a sheep.
  2. Its teams’ names. They were named by a lovely author of lovely children’s books.

Let’s list the MAAC Teams.

We have the Niagara Purple Eagles (oooh!).

We have the Fairfield Stags (ah! majestic!).

We have the Canisius Golden Griffins (bad boy alert!).

We have the Monmouth Hawks (ehh).

We have the Marist Red Foxes (*deafening roar of applause*).

We have the St. Peter’s Peacocks (“The St. Peter’s what now get this guy outta here he’s playin’!” “No he’s not! That’s their name!”).

We have the Siena Saints (solid).

We have the Quinnipiac Bobcats (sneaky!).

We have the Manhattan Jaspers (sounds *fresh*).

We have the Iona Gaels (exotic!).

And last, but not because they’re least (it’s because they’re the last one I thought of I’ve been naming these teams to my friends for months now)…we have the Rider Broncs (*standing ovation*).

So much fun. Wow. What a league.

Anyway, Siena gets the NIT automatic bid if they lose at some point. They get three chances to do it. The tournament’s in Atlantic City this year, which I think is new? Used to be at Siena. But yeah, Atlantic City now. Like in the Bruce Springsteen song. You know, “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight).”
