With college basketball potentially being a conference-only affair this coming season, there are talks from supporters of the NIT’s bastard child to expand that 68-team tournament into something larger, like a 96 or 128-team affair.
Beyond concerns about that tournament’s health (it’s not fat-shaming to say that obesity is a serious concern for tournaments), the obvious response to this is an eyebrow-raise. This isn’t about the coronavirus. This isn’t about wanting to make sure the best teams make it. This isn’t about giving more teams opportunities to prove themselves.
This is about trying to annex the NIT.
Well, guess what, NCA* *********t fans. You can’t have it. You can’t have the NIT. Taking 28 of its teams, or even all 32, or even all 32 plus another 28 won’t kill it. As long as there is a tournament being played that is called the NIT, the NIT is still the greatest.
And no attempt to disguise a hostile takeover as some grand gesture of support for the little guy is going to change that.
