The Finches Have Returned and They Are Pooping Everywhere

If you’ve ever wondered where these blog posts are written, the answer is most commonly the desk in my apartment, looking out at the balcony past the window. Not that exciting, but good natural light, and it gets really hot in the middle of the afternoon if I forget to close the blinds, so I’m naturally reminded I should go drive Uber to feed myself.

Anyway, a big subplot around this point last year in my life was the birds. I think they’re wrens—looked it up back then, don’t remember what I learned besides that they probably wouldn’t attack me (I was concerned because I’ve had a robin try to steal my hat for walking too close to its nest, and I am nothing without my hat). I tried to stop them from making a nest on top of the little light fixture on the balcony (again, didn’t want my hat getting stolen), but I failed, returning from the NIT Final Four to find their nest atop the light fixture (which doesn’t seem like it works). They remained there for the summer (never attacked my hat). Pooped all over the place. Don’t think they ever laid any eggs, because I never found eggshells, and eventually, about a month ago, I finally grabbed a garbage bag and disposed of the nest, having not seen the little birds for a while.

This week, they returned.

And they are as prolific of bowel movers as ever.

We’re moving out of this apartment when the NIT ends, so it isn’t really my problem, but I do kind of want to use the balcony because it’s pretty nice to sit outside now and then, so I should probably start cleaning it again. There’s bird poop on the table.  And the railing. And the cooler we didn’t have anywhere else to store. Also, when I was trying to stop them from building the nest, I wrapped a ton of paper in duct tape and duct taped that paper to the top of the light fixture, so I should probably take that down, I guess.

Anyway, the wrens are back. Or are they finches?

Just googled. Definitely finches. House finches, I think.

Anyway, the finches are back, and I don’t know if they’re going to make a nest again, but they’ve done it before, so I should probably take down the ineffective duct tape ball from last year before I really have to invade their space to do that.

Sounds like a task for tomorrow.
