The Opponent
Davidson. You know, the Fighting Steph Curry Nostalgias. The A-10’s seventh finest (going by last year’s standings). Aspiring NIT contenders, Davidson can probably be taken a little lightly. But that doesn’t mean Texas should take Davidson lightly. But maybe a little lightly.
What Texas Needs to Do
Win, man. Texas winning Maui (Asheville) would do wonders for Shaka Smart’s job security, which is the immediate priority here. Athletic departments love winning Maui (Asheville). The media loves those who win Maui (Asheville). Maui (Asheville) loves those who win Maui (Asheville, and actually, Asheville’s basketball community’s probably pulling for Davidson, UNC, or—depending when they retired and from where they retired—Indiana).
On the Court
Perimeter defense, take the easy buckets. Davidson won’t lock anyone down, which is good, because that’s the big concern about the ‘Horns. They will, however, shoot threes, and if they’re feeling sparkly, they might even make ‘em. It’s not just Kellan Grady, either. Hyunjung Lee can knock ‘em down.
Lock down the perimeter, take what the Wildcats give you, and move on to the semi’s.
Hook ‘em.
