1. Good day.
TCU gave some trouble, but never got too close. Good way to end the regular season. Three straight take-care-of-business wins, one of which was a pretty good one up in Norman.
2. The turnovers were concerning.
A little bit careless at times. Got away with it, but something to keep an eye on as we get into single-elimination season.
3. Where next?
Texas lines up opposite Texas Tech on Thursday—which, as we’ve seen, is a tossup. If they can win, it’s probably Kansas en route to most likely Baylor. Not a bad path.
The thing about the Big 12 pack—those four non-Oklahoman schools behind Baylor—is how close they all are on paper. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State aren’t too far off, either. So just as the regular season ended with Texas within half a game of second and half a game of fifth, this week could either be a dud or a thriller.
Beyond there…since the NIT’s out of the picture (alas, but we accepted this a while ago and we understand that Shaka Smart needs to do what Shaka Smart needs to do, and we support him in that endeavor because, as has been said, he was nice to us one time and mean to us zero times), Texas is looking at a 4-seed or a 5-seed in that other tournament. It seems like if they lose to Texas Tech, they’re a five. If they beat Texas Tech, they’re a four. If they win the Big 12…a three? A two if they go through Baylor? Assuming they stay on the 4-line or 5-line, they’ll probably be a small underdog if they can get to the second round. I’m not sure what the expectations are in Austin. Making the second weekend is a reasonable goal, but it isn’t the most likely result right now.
For the time being, though, Texas Tech is the focus. Gonna be a dogfight. Gotta keep their heads.
