Texas Dominates UTRGV—Five Thoughts

1. People forget that Shaka Smart also won a CBI.

Sorry, was on his Wikipedia page tonight because we were talking about his hair and one thing led to another.

2. Andrew Jones had a cough.

Jones was held out as a precautionary measure. As a cancer survivor, he’s at greater risk if he does contract the coronavirus, but still seems like a good idea to isolate him until the symptom recedes. Hope he’s all good. He did test negative in the most recent round of testing, which was yesterday, per Craig Way.

3. Greg Brown threw it down.

Like that number four. Brett Favre. Lou Gehrig. The Wendy’s 4 for $4. Also, had a double double.

4. Turnovers happened.

As expected, turnovers were an issue. It’s hard to know how much of this was UTRGV—those guys are good at taking the ball away—but something to keep an eye on. Brown’s five turnovers weren’t all that troubling, given it was his first college game (and he did throw it down a few times), and Courtney Ramey did plenty to make up for his four, but keep an eye on it.

5. The defensive results were promising.

Yes, it was UTRGV, but if defense is going to be a core piece of this team’s identity, it’s good to start by holding an opponent to 29% shooting. And that was just on two-point attempts (head exploding emoji).
