A few months ago, during a layover in the St. Louis Airport, we discovered Ted Drewes:
Since then, this is what we’ve learned:
We Have Bad Friends
Multiple of you knew about Ted Drewes and didn’t tell us? Not cool.
Ted Drewes Is a Frozen Custard Legend
So it turns out that down or up or over in St. Louis (depends where you’re reading this), Ted Drewes is an icon. One of the locations is on Route 66, and the shop’s been around in some capacity for nearly one hundred years. Allegedly very, very good, in addition to being a longstanding tradition.
Ted Drewes Sells Christmas Trees
Ted Drewes not only sells Christmas trees, but owns tree farms in Nova Scotia. That’s how you know a place is dedicated to the craft.
There’s More Than One Ted Drewes
It appears the man on the airport custard machine is Ted Drewes Jr., who took over from his dad a long, long time ago. Ted Drewes Sr., the shop’s website proudly boasts, won twelve straight Muny Tennis Championships. Tennis, Trees, and Terrific Treats. Impressive stuff.

Clearly, we need to get to St. Louis again. Ideally during the months when Ted Drewes is open (it closes in the winter, which is another hallmark of a great frozen dairy place). Might be time for another Joe Kelly Heritage Tour.
