I watched a little of the fifth season of American Idol. A kid from my hometown was on it. I assumed Taylor Hicks was close to forty and never gave it another thought.
Turns out he was 29?
I’m sure this was covered sixteen years ago, but I’m processing it today. It’s the hair, of course. Wikipedia says it started to go gray when he was fourteen. That’s early!
Anyway, if anyone’s worried we were losing Taylor Hicks, rest assured: He’s a decade or two younger than I thought. Which also explains how he was in a position to go on American Idol? Feel like not a lot of folks in their forties have that kind of flexibility. If they do, they’re probably already financing their own midlife crisis-driven music career.
Also: Is American Idol just karaoke? That’s the gist of the show, I think. Again, sorry if you covered this when I was a child. Clearly, I’m behind on my pondering from that era.
Also also: Did Taylor Hicks winning American Idol foreshadow Donald Trump winning the 2016 election, by demonstrating how disparate supposed mainstream American tastes were from those of the people who watch network television and vote? Wow. This has taken quite the turn.
