Stu’s Notes: Saudi Arabia Has Bad Vibes

There is no way around what I’m about to say.

Saudi Arabia Has Bad Vibes

Formula 1 is about to start a race in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, close to where an oil depot was attacked on Friday. It wasn’t clear, as smoke billowed in the air above practice, if the race would go ahead, but it’s going ahead, partially because—evidently, per the BBC—there was at the very least speculation (and possibly more than speculation) that Saudi Arabia would try to detain drivers if they didn’t race. Yikes! Then, Mick Schumacher crashed in qualifying, and while he was ok, they did take him to the hospital by helicopter, which…I mean, this race might not be cursed cursed, but the vibes are terrible. Just awful vibes in Saudi Arabia, which always seems to be the case when oppressive crown princes are involved, but appears especially concentrated with respect to this race. Saudi Arabia hasn’t crossed F1’s red line of starting a land war in Europe, so we should be back again next year, but the vibes remain bad.

NASCAR Has No Vibes

Meanwhile, NASCAR’s here in Austin and I’m not hearing a peep, nor am I hearing a vroom, nor am I hearing a squeal followed by crashing noises. Hopefully I’m just not listening closely enough.

Texas Tech Has Great Vibes

Not even 24 hours after stealing home with Texas’s pitcher’s head down to walk it off in Lubbock, Tech shortstop Kurt Wilson was at it again last night, hitting a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the tenth to vanquish the Longhorns. More tomorrow in Bevo’s Fake Nuts, but you just hate to see it. Texas losing in comedic fashion to the only unambiguously cooler school in the state? You hate seeing that.

The Sens Have Sens Vibes

The Florida Panthers have the second-best record in hockey. Last night, the Ottawa Senators held a 3-0 lead against them in the second period. They’d gotten too far, though, the Sens had, and when they looked around, there was no one left to Sens but themselves. So, Sens themselves they did, and the fellas lost 4-3 in a shootout. Anton Forsberg played well in net, Drake Batherson had a great game in his return from injury, next game Tuesday in Nashville.
