Bohm & Beasley, as always.
If You Don’t Hate Philadelphia, Do You Hate Philadelphia?
Alec Bohm made headlines last night, partially for making three errors and mostly for being lip-read on camera saying, “I fucking hate this place,” after Phillies fans gave him a sarcastic cheer for a play he did make. I’m sure Philadelphia radio hosts are having a blast with it, but really, don’t you think this makes Phillies fans love the guy? For one thing, the Phillies won. For another, he owned it after the game. For a third, isn’t this kind of the point of Philadelphia? If you love Philadelphia, it isn’t because it’s glamorous or anything like that. It’s because you’ve developed a loyalty to the city despite the lack of glamour, and instead for reasons related to how seriously cities take themselves, and when they choose to take themselves seriously. Philly’s calling card is that it’s tough and/or silly, and a place known for being tough and/or silly should be one even its most loyal citizens sometimes hate. Even if this isn’t true, telling Phillies fans that they made you miserable is about the nicest thing you can say about Philadelphia as an athlete. That’s like being a thirty-year-old dude and telling someone from Indianapolis that they did a great job hosting the Final Four the last time they had it.
Will NIT Alum Malik Beasley Lead the Timberwolves to an NBA Playoff Berth?
The first NBA “play-in” games are tonight, and the T-Wolves are led by Malik Beasley, an NIT alum. I’m going to level with you all now. I don’t know who all is and isn’t an NIT alum in the NBA. We’d like to make a database, but that’s a low priority on the wish list. We do know Beasley played in it in 2016, and that he tore up Davidson and played fine against Valparaiso in FSU’s loss, at least on offense. We would assume this will propel him to dominance this evening, but it’s possible the Clippers have an even more storied NIT alum we’re forgetting.
More on Steve
After publishing Bevo’s Fake Nuts earlier about Steve Sarkisian’s response to Moro Ojomo’s comments from last week, we got a fuller readout from that response, and…it doesn’t look great. We didn’t realize Sark had gone into this much detail in his reaction. Thought it had been more offhand. Instead, he really criticized Ojomo, and seemed to imply he disagrees with Ojomo. What seemed like it could actually be a pretty good situation between a veteran in the locker room and his new-ish head coach now looks kind of bad, and it could’ve been nothing but now it definitely isn’t nothing, and it might go back to being nothing but basically, Texas football still has a bad vibe about it.

Viewing schedule today:
- 4:12 PM EDT: Cubs @ Pittsburgh (Regional TV)
- 7:05 PM EDT: Milwaukee @ Baltimore (Regional TV) – watching to see if Craig Counsell does something weaselly so I can do the Leonardo DiCaprio point-at-the-TV meme
- 9:45 PM EDT: San Diego @ San Francisco (Regional TV) – Sorry, Beasley and Terrance Mann, but you guys didn’t even make the quarterfinals. My loyalty to Yu Darvish runs deeper than that.
