It is the day you have long awaited. July 5th. Championship Sunday. The day we, as a bracket-voting community, decide which State Flag That Doesn’t Glorify Slavery is the greatest.
And boy, do we ever have two great contestants.
On the one hand, California’s simplicity, originality, and bear endear it to the hearts of millions. On the other, Arizona’s captures the best part of the state (desert sunsets) in timeless, glorious fashion. If this were confined to which looks better on a dorm room wall, sure, California might have a leg up, and if this were confined to which looks better waving back and forth above a crowd, of course, Arizona would hold the advantage, but this is not a situational bracket. This is a holistic competition, in which voters are judging both flags entirely on their merits (or, you know, on which state they’re from/which flag they like more/which flag they have an emotional tie to because of reasons denim-related or otherwise).
In case you missed it, here’s why six flags weren’t included. Here are the 44 flags that were included. Here are image credits for every flag pictured on our site.
Now.
This is it.
Voting will last until about 11:00 AM EDT tomorrow—Monday. Tomorrow afternoon or evening, the champion will be crowned, and we’ll lay out The People’s Rankings, which will serve as our initial seeding for the 2021 State Flags That Don’t Glorify Slavery Bracket™ (if Mississippi has a new flag by then, or if D.C. is somehow a state, or if Georgia or Florida or Tennessee or Arkansas or Alabama gets their shit together and makes a non-Confederacy-honoring flag, we’ll of course add them in but will likely just do it subjectively).
As always, three ways to vote.
