The NIT is always the testing ground for college basketball’s experimental rules, and after last night’s happenings at Madison Square Garden, many are wondering whether next year’s NIT could try out letting players settle disputes through fisticuffs.
Personally, I’m about it. I do think there needs to be some mechanism for stopping the fights before it gets to the point where one of us says, “mmm, maybe this was a bad idea,” and I think a fight should count as two personal fouls for each player involved (and two team fouls—I want to see double one-and-ones being shot [ones-and-one?]), but those seem like things we can do. Also, they should let coaches fight each other. Because if you’ve ever heard a commentator talk about how desperate a coach is when he gets T’d up in an NIT second round game, you’re going to love what they say when that coach drops the proverbial gloves with his equal in front of the scorer’s table.
