I saw one of those graphics where, hmm, how do I describe this. I’ll just track it down, I guess. This is what I saw:
First off, these are awesome, how do I make them, every time I see them I react this way they never get old, please someone tell me how to make them I really want to make one tracking the desserts I eat over the course of next year or perhaps even just next month.
Secondly…Ron Santo was that good?!?
I knew WAR liked Santo. I knew Santo’s Hall of Fame exclusion was borderline unconscionable. But Santo was *that* good?? Santo was better than Ernie Banks???
It’s not just bWAR, either. And it doesn’t change if you add in pitchers. Whether you use pitchers or not, whether you use FanGraphs or Baseball Reference, you get Ron Santo as the second-best Cub of all time, and since the most productive Cub was a racist fuck even by the standards of his full-of-racist-fuckery time and played a big role in the formal erection of baseball’s color barrier, Ron Santo is, in a hard-to-argue-against sense, the greatest Cub of all time.
Also the only one to have his hairpiece catch fire live on the radio.
God, I love Ron Santo. Rest in peace, man. Sorry I didn’t realize how good you were. Sorry those fuckers kept you out of the Hall of Fame for so long. Hope you’re taking them yard in Heaven.
