Ok, Mets Fans. Give Him Back.

The owner of the New York Mets!

In case he deletes it, it reads: “It’s hard to understand how professional hitters can be this unproductive. The best teams have a more disciplined approach. The slugging and OPS numbers don’t lie.”

There’s a lot going on here. First of all, Steve, you bought the Mets. You moved into the haunted house. The most publicly-acknowledged-as-haunted house in the world. You don’t get to complain about ghosts. Never get involved in a land war in Asia, do not buy the New York Mets. There are rules in this world.

Secondly, I mean every sentence has something to say. Steve goes from bewilderment to diagnostics to citing the first rung of advanced stats. He implies he does understand, and that discipline is the problem. He also seems to assert that all professional hitters should be above-average, which is of course impossible. It is a remarkable tweet.

Sadly, our friend Javy Báez is taking the heat for it.

No, no. Javy didn’t send it. That would be hilarious, though. It would be so good if Javy Báez stole Steve Cohen’s phone and was like, “Hey boss, check it out. I’m gonna make a lot of people hate you even more than they already do.” But no. The indication’s that Steve sent it himself.

Anyway, Javy Báez has just a 53 wRC+ over 37 plate appearances since joining the Mets. He’s struck out fourteen times. He has six hits. He’s walked twice, which is fun, but…not going well. He’s also hurt right now, and the Mets have also absolutely collapsed over these last few weeks, so Mets fans are taking it out on our guy, or on their team’s front office for acquiring our guy. We saw the seeds coming. There were headlines that basically said, Hey, does anyone know how to get this guy to swing less? The Mets may have done their due diligence, but their fan-media apparatus did not. They did not understand Javier Báez.

So, today, Javy Báez trends on Twitter because his owner basically said, “Our hitters suck,” and the fans, instead of looking at the hitters who suck, looked at the guy who’s only appeared in ten games and decided he was the one to highlight here.

I like this plan:

I think this should be a rule.

If you don’t treat the gift with respect, you have to give it back. You don’t get to get the thing you paid for it back—we’re keeping Pete, Pete was also a gift—but if you’re going to be rude about this, Mets fans, we would appreciate it if you would return our speedy & quick & powerful young man, whom we will deploy against you to make your infielders forget how to play baseball and have to restart their careers overseas.
