The Cubs are trying out Taylor Gushue at backup catcher, and if you don’t know who that is, you’re not alone. Looks like he’s a 27-year-old, switch-hitting former fourth-round pick with a 103 wRC+ at AAA on the year. More importantly for our purposes, though, he’s not Tony Wolters, which spoils our hopes of Big Tony/Little Tony coming to fruition. To hurt ourselves more, let’s picture how it could have gone:
Little Tony: Hey Big Tony, heard your back’s been bothering you.
Big Tony: Yeah, man. Say, welcome back.
Little Tony: Did you say…welcome…BACK?
*audience laughter*
This is the kind of thing you don’t get when you call up Taylor Gushue.
