NASCAR, Michigan Preview: The Doldrums

NASCAR’s got a doubleheader this weekend at Michigan, and I don’t know what to write about. The Denny Hamlin/Kevin Harvick duel at the top of the standings has been impressive, but without any public tension between the two, it’s kind of boring. Jimmie Johnson’s hopes for one last playoff appearance are compelling, but they’re pretty much all we’ve written about in the last month. If Bubba Wallace were to win a race, it’d be a watershed moment for his young career, but he’s such a longshot every week that it feels disingenuous to call him a driver to watch.

Suggestions? Something needs to ignite a Hamlin/Harvick feud. Kyle Busch needs a disaster to put his playoff chances in actual jeopardy. Martin Truex Jr. seems like he’s spoiling for a fight with the Penske boys. I can come up with more if you guys want, but I don’t think NASCAR’s brass reads these posts. Statistically unlikely.

Your move, NASCAR.
