Yu Darvish is pitching again today, meaning today is my fourth Japanese lesson (if you’re new to the series, I’m learning Japanese so I can read his tweets and respond in the language in which they’re written, because I love him).
Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
This is going to take a while
It’s the fourth lesson, and I’m not sure I’m halfway through even learning the characters, let alone what different words mean or how sentences are structured or if it’s polite to say things with a Cracker Barrel biscuit in my mouth. A lot of this is because these Internet-taught lessons don’t have a designated beginning and end, so I usually cut them off after about five minutes. But a lot of it is also that this seems really hard for an English-speaker. I’ve learned a little Spanish, and it took way less time than this. Although in hindsight, I had classes in Spanish for at least a few months of the year for six straight years of public schooling, so maybe this is a time commitment issue.
That’s about it
I mean, I’ve learned other things. But that’s the only one I think is really applicable at this point. I’ll keep you posted, though. And if you’re a Japanese speaker and want to talk shop, I can at least tell you that I’m learning to read Hiragana aloud and it’s taking a while.
