Ok, before we move on from Oklahoma’s narrow escape from Kansas this Saturday (briefly, of course—Oklahoma almost losing to Kansas is going to become a big ol’ talking point come conference championship weekend), let’s give Kansas some credit, and I’m not talking about the football team. This is athletic department-wide. From midway through that game:
I mean, it was a great move, and teams should do it more often. I know you can’t do it too often, for fear people will stop buying tickets, but here and there? Open those doors. Get the people in the building. Create some spontaneity.
Going off of this, I think even a good program should build some special standing room and not announce it publicly, then, if it’s tight at the half against a good opponent, unveil it and tell people to come. I’m thinking a special upper-upper deck, unfolding like a retractable roof. Waste of money? Maybe. But think of the memories created. Think of the terror it would inspire in the opposition, rising from behind the press box to block out the sun. Alabama, I’m specifically looking at you here. You have some proximity to rocket scientists. Make it happen.
