I know, I know. I don’t want to be a hater. I was born in 1994 near Chicago. I grew up believing Michael Jordan to be so good at basketball that I would refer to, say, The Beatles as “the Michael Jordan of music,” or to the Buddha as the Michael Jordan of…well, Buddhism.
But we can’t ignore one piece of his legacy. Or, rather, we can’t ignore one piece that’s absent from his legacy.
Michael Jordan never won an NIT.
So, while we can recognize Michael Jordan as the greatest professional basketball player of all time, and we can give the NCAA a much needed shake of the head for its war on the NIT that culminated in the late 70’s, if we’re taking the Greatest-of-All-Time debate seriously, there has to be a chapter in which we parse through whether Ralph Sampson could have eclipsed George Mikan if his legs had held up in the pro’s.
