#McCartneyNoCristo

A friend sent me the following this morning, and I am appreciative that he did. This is the kind of thing we want to keep tabs on. It’s always important to have some awareness of what the penguins from Madagascar are up to, but especially during the holiday season, when it’s sneakily summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

What’s up with the hashtag, though?

At a glance, this would seem to signify that Paul McCartney is not the Christ, a claim upon which most of us would agree. (Although he did die and now he’s alive again, so…) But why would someone feel the need to point that out? Is someone out there claiming McCartney is the Christ? What language is this post in anyways?

It turns out that the language is Portuguese, and it turns out that in Portuguese, “no” doesn’t mean “no.” It means “at the.” “Não” is “no.”

So, what the Portuguese are asking for—or rather, the Brazilians, still speaking Portuguese as an homage to Nelly Furtado’s heritage—is for McCartney to play at the Christ. The Christ. Christ the Redeemer. Evidently you can play concerts there?

McCartney’s on tour in Brazil this week, and he’s playing Maracaña Stadium on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro. It seems the movement here—one implicitly supported by the dancing penguins—is to move the show to the statue. Which provokes one final question:

Can the Christ the Redeemer statue dance? (I bet it could do some sick dabs.)
