Well, out of the season’s context, not a bad result. In context, though…
The Result:
Burnley 2, Southampton 2
How It Happened:
Burnley grabbed an early lead, Maxwel Cornet scoring off a Matt Lowton cross, but true to form, they coughed it right up, yielding a goal off a corner late in the first half and yielding a second on a dreadful James Tarkowski turnover early in the second. Thankfully, Cornet was a machine, scoring again just minutes later to draw it even, where it stayed for the rest of the match. Should have been better. Could have been worse.
What It Means:
Burnley’s relegation probability, per FiveThirtyEight, holds even at 41%. Burnley stays 18th in the table, still three points behind Leeds for 17th.
What’s Next:
The lads have a midweek match with Tottenham in the EFL Cup Round of 16. Then, Brentford comes to town on Saturday, with Burnley badly needing a win but not favored to get one.
Other News:
Cornet left the match after nursing what appeared to be a cramp. Hopefully that’s all it was.
The women’s team managed a draw with top-of-table Wolverhampton today, and on the road, no less. Great result. Ayr United managed a draw with Arbroath. Portadown managed to navigate a draw with Glentoran F.C. Llandudno beat up Buckley Town, 3-0, and is now 9-2-1 for 29 points, just four back of the top of Cymru North.
Thoughts:
The play, again, seems fine overall, and maybe even good. But there are those lapses and the resulting mistakes, and they’re just frustrating. Hard to get excited about the Cup match with so much pressure coming on Saturday.
On a happier note, Maxwel Cornet is rad. Crushes it. What a pickup. Give that man a castle and a half.
