Five thoughts:
1. That feels…consequential.
Ferrari failing to get their pole-sitting car to the starting line. Mercedes failing to get a tire off their podium-contending car and having to drop it out of the race. Lewis Hamilton getting nothing going all day.
Big things happened! Two of them were funny! Really funny. I mean, those are hilarious things to happen.
2. Don’t crash in qualifying, kids.
It was a funny move by Charles Leclerc, but it turned out horribly, as one would imagine.
3. Yachts are cool but only in the Mediterranean.
You got a yacht elsewhere? Not as cool. Sorry. Just doesn’t seem as cool to me. But in the Mediterranean? Damn. That’s cool.
4. Hard to pass at Monaco, eh?
Woof. I see why they want to make things more competitive.
5. Was that actually consequential?
I am no expert, but it feels like Hamilton’s going to pass Max Verstappen back soon, and that he’s going to carry Mercedes ahead of Red Bull the rest of the way. Although I guess maybe I don’t know enough about Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez. Maybe there’s some drama there. Hopefully there is, because even with Verstappen winning today, I get the idea a Lewis Hamilton championship is something of an inevitability.
But I guess if Monaco’s the biggest grand prix, then yeah, consequential on its own. Suppose that’s the takeaway.
