Max Verstappen Wins, Lewis Hamilton Dodges Disaster at Bologna—Six Thoughts

1. Yeah, didn’t watch again.

I want to, though. Just didn’t work out this morning. Been reactive instead of proactive lately. Trying to get back on the feet in that sense so I can do things like watch Formula 1 races and be friendlier to those around me.

2. Let’s see who won.

Max Verstappen! I know who that guy is. He was the one who Lewis Hamilton had to hold off in Bahrain.

3. Let’s see if anything else happened.

Ooh, ok. Two things. Related.

My understanding is that Hamilton was trying to pass George Russell, but lost it on the wet track and came to the wall, only to be bailed out by Russell and Valtteri Bottas crashing and drawing a rare red flag. Hamilton came back to finish second, so it ended up ok, but it could’ve been real bad for the championship favorite.

The Russell/Bottas thing is funny, right? The reaction, at least? I know crashes are bad in F1 (correct me if I’m wrong on that) but beef seems fun, still.

4. Lando Norris came in third.

Our guy (because we were told he should be our guy) worked his way back after yesterday’s qualifying mishap to find the podium. Good day for the young’un.

5. Let’s look at the standings.

Hamilton’s ahead of Verstappen by a point right now (not sure why, but I’m gonna save that for another time). Top…let’s just do five since that gets us to Bottas (makes the Bottas/Russell wreck seem important, which I now realize it may have been).

1. Hamilton – 44
2. Verstappen – 43
3. Norris – 27
4. Charles Leclerc – 20
5. Bottas – 16

Also, since I’m told teams are a big deal, here are the team standings:

1. Mercedes – 60
2. Red Bull Racing Honda – 53
3. McLaren Mercedes – 41
4. Ferrari – 34

There are others, but those appear to be the big four. Mercedes, I’ve gathered, is Hamilton and Bottas. Verstappen and Sergio Peréz drive for Red Bull. Norris and Daniel Ricciardo drive for McLaren. Leclerc and Charles Sainz Jr. drive for Ferrari.

6. What’s next?

We’re two grands prix (thank you, commenter/friend) into a 23-grands prix season, and we’re heading across the continent to Iberia, with no race next weekend but then races May 2nd and 9th in Portugal and Spain, respectively.

F1 task for me this week (or next weekend) is to do something that adds to my knowledge of F1.

***

Whoops forgot to add I see that F1 is coming to Miami next year? Making Austin no longer the only American grand prix? Feel a little defensive, not gonna lie. But also, Miami is clearly trying to copy Austin. Classic Miami. Next they’ll probably start speaking Spanish or something.
