It’s official.
Joe Kelly is out for Opening Day.
On Saturday, Dave Roberts confirmed everyone’s suspicions, saying our hero will remain in Arizona and continue to build up his arm strength while the Dodgers travel to Denver to begin the season.
There isn’t any timetable on Kelly’s emergence from the IL, and there isn’t a firm explanation of what’s going on (I’ve seen it called general arm soreness, and it’s possible that’s all it is, but it’s also possible something more specific ailed him or is ailing him). But that’s ok. Because there will come a day this season when Joe Kelly emerges from the Injured List, and when he starts pumping fastballs into the zone again (in the high 90’s, of course), and when he freezes someone on a knucklecurve and we all say, “There he is. There’s the Joe Kelly we know.”
Until then, we’ll wait, and we’ll watch, and when the day comes, we’ll be ready.
Stay prepared.
