It was a wild night last night in Colorado, with the Rockies and Dodgers combining to score 21 runs.
Joe Kelly was on the mound for three of those runs—though only one of them was earned.
With starter Hyun-Jin Ryu having recorded zero outs and allowed five runs already in the frame, Joe Kelly came to the mound. And as he’s prone to doing, he threw lightning bolts through the thin Denver air, hitting 100 mph multiple times.
But even 100 mph fastballs couldn’t stop the bleeding, as after a leadoff double by Nolan Arenado (that, it should be noted, was only hit hard enough and with a launch angle such that it had a 20% chance of falling in for a hit), disaster struck. Two infield singles. An error by Justin Turner. Two more infield singles.
By the end of the frame, Kelly must have been exhausted, but the man held his ground and kept the damage to three. A tragically heroic performance, but heroic nonetheless.
Oh, and also, Joe Kelly bounced a ball off the backstop to Russell Martin, setting him up to throw out Daniel Murphy trying to advance to second, which was pretty fun.
